2024 marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of Theta’s Day of Service. Held on Oct. 19, Bettie Locke’s birthday, Thetas serve their respective communities around the globe.
All four founders were known to have contributed to their communities, participating in local groups and providing service where they lived.
Day of Service taps into that long tradition of Thetas helping others. The pages of the Kappa Alpha Theta Magazine include multiple references to Thetas volunteering during times of war and economic need. Thetas collected clothes for war refugees during World War I. Thetas volunteered as Red Cross workers or knitted for soldiers during World War II. Thetas participated in campus clean-up days. Alumnae chapter members sewed baby layettes for local hospitals. Thetas collected toys for local children in need. Thetas assisted food pantries. Thetas have given of their time and talent in a myriad of ways over the years.
Former Fraternity President Adelaide MacDonald Sinclair (1936-1942) once said, “The world should be a better place because Kappa Alpha Theta exists.” Day of Service is our opportunity as Thetas to show how we can make the world a better place in our local areas.
