When I moved from Orange County to Texas in 2022, I felt a deep sense of loneliness. Starting fresh in a new city is daunting, and I often found myself searching for some strong women connections. It was through Kappa Alpha Theta and Dallas CASA that I found not just a community, but a purpose.
As a Theta in college, I learned about CASA and its mission to advocate for abused and neglected children. However, it wasn’t until I reconnected with CASA in Dallas that I truly understood its incredible power. Dallas CASA is remarkable, providing 100% representation for foster children in Dallas County—a feat made possible by the tireless efforts of advocates, volunteers, and fundraisers.
The most powerful moment for me came when a friend fostered her first child. After she exhaustedly vented about the complex system and her overwhelmed social worker, I gently asked, “Do you have a CASA?”
Her entire demeanor changed. She lit up, expressing how her CASA had been her and her child’s savior. She had no idea of my involvement and gave me her genuine, heartfelt feedback. We both cried. As a fundraiser, I hear stories like this often, but hearing this earnest feedback firsthand from someone I care about was deeply affirming. I could again cry now just thinking about it.
While I’m not a CASA (yet), my role as a fundraiser still allows me to make an impact. Fundraising is the financial lifeblood of CASA, ensuring advocates have the training, resources, and support they need to represent children in court. It’s a way to be a changemaker behind the scenes, creating the foundation that makes advocacy possible.
CASAblanca, Dallas CASA’s top-yielding fundraiser, perfectly illustrates this impact. Organized by the Dallas CASA Young Professionals group, this annual event raises critical funds to sustain CASA’s mission. CASAblanca 2025 will be held on Friday, Feb. 7, 2025, and I’m thrilled to support this extraordinary evening of philanthropy and community.
Representation is another reason I’m so passionate about CASA. As a woman of color, I know how important it is for children in the foster care system to see leaders who reflect their identities. CASA needs more diverse voices, and I hope my work inspires others to step into these roles.
Kappa Alpha Theta and CASA have given me a home in Dallas and a way to lead with heart. Together, they remind me that we can all create ripples of compassion, no matter how we contribute. I’m proud to support CASA and grateful for the sisterhood that helped me find this path.
