From Ole Miss to CASA: The Role of Theta in My Leadership and Service

In 2002, as an 18-year-old from a small Mississippi town, I embarked on a journey to Oxford, MS, to attend the University of Mississippi, affectionately known as Ole Miss. Growing up in Mississippi, I was familiar with Ole Miss and its vibrant Greek system. What I didn't know was which organization I would join, but I was certain that wherever I landed, it would be a cornerstone of my personal growth, the birthplace of lifelong friendships, and a platform for leadership.

I wanted to leave a lasting impact on those around me and leave an organization better than I found it. I wasn't well-versed in the philanthropic missions of each organization, particularly Kappa Alpha Theta’s. Over my four years as an undergraduate, I learned about our ability to raise funds for CASA. But, there was no local program in Oxford; the nearest was in Memphis, TN, 60 miles away. After graduating in 2006, CASA lingered in my thoughts, especially in 2014 when I pondered ways to give back to my community. An idea sparked within me: Why not CASA? I researched starting a program but was daunted by the requirements. Instead, I pursued becoming a volunteer advocate in Memphis. For ten weeks, I commuted after work for training, and I was assigned a case soon after. For nearly four years, I volunteered until I decided to establish a CASA program in Oxford. In 2018, this dream became a reality. Serving as an advisory board chair (ABC) for Theta at the time, I realized how impactful a local chapter could be, providing hands-on experience and support.

Today, I proudly serve as the founding executive director of CASA of North Mississippi, a program serving three counties. Over the past six years, this role has been more than a job; it has been my passion, a passion ignited by Kappa Alpha Theta. When you do something you love, you never have to work a day in your life. Without Theta, I wouldn't have discovered CASA or had the opportunity to start this program. When asked how I got involved with CASA, I always trace it back to my membership in Theta. This organization has enriched my life for 22 years, molding me into a better person through its values, philanthropy, and the incredible leaders I've met along the way.

Most importantly, CASA of North Mississippi has changed the lives of hundreds of children, and much of this success is owed to Kappa Alpha Theta. This organization sparked within me a deep passion for helping others. Theta taught me to dream big and to chase those dreams with determination. The personal growth I experienced, the leadership skills I honed, and the lifelong friendships I formed have all contributed to my journey. I often reflect on how fortunate I am to be a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, grateful for all it has taught me and given me. It’s for this reason that I will always give back to Theta.

This journey has enhanced my involvement in Theta, empowering me to take on various volunteer roles, inspire college women, lead others, and advocate for involvement with CASA. I encourage every Theta to chase the dreams that are sparked within them, to believe in the power of their passion, and to make a difference in the world. I am a better person because of Theta, and I am proud to say that I am forever grateful for its influence on my life.
